A default address, also referred to as a catch-all address, is used to receive emails sent to invalid or non-existent email addresses within a domain. This feature ensures that no emails are missed, even if they are directed to an incorrect or outdated address. In this guide, we will walk you through the process of setting up a default address in cPanel.

  1. Enter cPanel - If you don't know how, you can follow this guide.

  2. In cPanel, look for the Default Address option under the Email tab.

  3. On the Default Address page, you will be able to set up a default address. At the top under Send all unrouted email for the following domain: please select the domain you wish to set up a default address for. Below that, you may select and input for two options:

    1. Discard the email while your server processes it by SMTP time with an error message. - If selected, the email will bounce back to the sender with a specified error message you can input under Failure Message (seen by sender).

    2. Forward to Email Address - If selected, all misrouted/misaddressed emails will be forwarded to the email address you input under Forward to Email Address:.

  4. For additional options, you can select Advanced Options. Under this tab you will be able to select three more options: Forward to your system account “sharedtx”, Pipe to a Program and Discard. Please note that these options are for more advanced users to setup. For the majority, you will either want to send a failure message or forward the email to a new address.

Once you have selected an option and input any necessary details, click Change to save the default address.

  5. After clicking Change, you will be redirected to a confirmation screen, telling you that your settings have been saved.

Congratulations! You've successfully setup a default address.
