When a visitor accesses a directory (rather than a page) on your website, the browser typically displays the directory’s index page. If no index page exists, the browser will display a list of the files within that directory. The Index Manager allows you to control how the directories on your website are displayed. To manage the index display, follow the below steps:

  1. Enter cPanel - If you don't know how, you can follow this guide.

  2. Click the Indexes option under the Advanced section from your cPanel Home page.

  3. Select the directory name that you want to modify, then click Edit.

  4. There are four settings to choose from. Click the indexing option that you want to set for the directory.

    • Inherit — cPanel will use the parent directories settings. If the index settings are not defined in the parent directory, then the system will set settings to default.

    • No IndexingNo files will appear for this directory if a default file is missing.

    • Show Filename Only Shows a simple list of the files present if the default file is missing.

    • Show Filename and DescriptionShows a list of files and their attributes: file size and type.

If you do not want the contents of this directory to be displayed, choose the 'No Indexing' option and click save.

  5. Once you have chosen your settings, click Save to save them to the server.

  6. Then you will get a confirmation message as follows:

Congratulations! You've successfully changed your index settings using cPanel.
