File permissions are generally considered a first line of defense and one of your server's most important security features. Permissions give you control over can read, write and execute files. Within this article, we will guide you on how to change permissions for your files and directories:

Please Note: For better security and website functionality, we recommend setting file permissions to 644 and directory permissions to 755. This ensures files are readable and writable by the owner, readable by others, and directories are accessible as needed. Avoid using overly permissive settings, as they can create security vulnerabilities.

  1. Enter cPanel - If you don't know how, you can follow this guide.

  2. Click File Manager icon under the Files section.

  3. Select the file or directory that you want to change then right click the file/directory and select Change Permissions.

  4. Now you can change the permissions for the user, group and world. Once you have selected the permissions, you can click Change Permissions.

  • User - Permissions granted to the owner of the file.

  • Group - Permissions granted to users within the group the file belongs to.

  • World - Permissions granted to all other users on the file.

  • Read - Grants ability to read the file.

  • Write - Grants ability to modify, or remove content from file.

  • Execute - Grants the ability to run the file as a program.

Congratulations! You've successfully changed the permissions for files and directories in cPanel.
